Jack to Step Away from Full Time Rugby

Further player news from the Cornish Pirates confirms that prop forward Jack Andrew is stepping away from full time rugby.

It was shortly after the Cornish Pirates announced in 2013 that prop Paul Andrew was departing to Worcester, that they confirmed younger brother Jack, who is now aged 33, was promptly due at the Mennaye Field. Arriving from Plymouth Albion, he had also previously played for Exeter Chiefs and the Cornish All Blacks.

When speaking ahead of his move to the Mennaye Field, Jack felt that it was the right place to be to improve still further, which of no surprise has proved the case. Indeed, he is presently the most experienced squad member who last season celebrated his testimonial and has to date made 236 appearances for the club, which is comfortably more than anyone else in the squad and is second only in number as a ‘Cornish Pirate’ behind joint head coach Alan Paver.

Speaking with reference to Jack, who plans to work in the construction industry, Alan has said:

“I think it is fair to say that the Andrew family have served the Pirates well, remembering also the contribution made by Jack’s brother Paul.

“For Jack to get to 10 years plus has been incredible, as was his testimonial last season, which was very well supported and showed the character of the man and the regard in which he is held.

“He has been a big character both on and off the field, who has helped guide our younger men. Though still a fine player, I said to him we needed his mind and his leadership and, as we have witnessed, along with Marlen (fellow squad member Marlen Walker) he has done a great job.

“To make 236 appearances for the Pirates is also a tremendous achievement, as it has become more difficult in the professional era to reach certain milestones, because your body goes through a lot to get to that point. Anyway, I am very proud that he stuck in there and developed into one of the finest prop forwards in the Championship, which is a real accolade.”
