The Cornish Pirates can confirm that lock forward Ed Scragg and hooker Syd Blackmore are leaving the club, finalising the list of leavers ahead of the 2022-23 season.
Arriving last summer from Welsh regional side Dragons Rugby, Somerset-born lock forward and former Wales under 20s player Ed, now aged 21, made six appearances for the club.
Cornish Pirates’ joint head coach Alan Paver has commented:
“Ed is a player full of promise. When he arrived with us, we understood he was in his development, so we took it upon ourselves to gain him some exposure with Plymouth Albion.
“Playing time for us has been limited, but having said that he contributed well at training, and was unlucky not to get more game time.
“We wish him all success in the future, and I am sure we will see him playing at a very good level.”
As for Syd, now aged 25, who signed for the club last June on a one-year contract, despite an injury disrupted season he still made 13 appearances and scored six tries.
With reference to Syd’s departure, Alan Paver said:
“Before signing for us Syd was highlighted as one of the most talented hookers in the league, and it was great that he was able to come on board.
“Unfortunately, injuries struck at no fault of his own, which to a degree marred much of his season.”
“Wherever Syd goes, we wish him luck with his next move, and through the undoubted talent that he possesses we are sure they are going to get great value from him.”
