The Pirates of Penzance & Newlyn RFC and the Cornish Pirates have always been fortunate for the support given them by cherished volunteers, whose input in a variety of ways over the years has been truly incredible.
One such group has been the club’s ground staff volunteers who, working more recently alongside the club’s professional head groundsman, have attended to ‘all-year-round’ needs.
That the Grounds Management Association (GMA) are keen to highlight #GroundsWeek (20 – 26 March) is very worthy, as it provides an opportunity to highlight work undertaken and the efforts made by dedicated club personnel.
People involved have been and are from all walks of life, the busy bees applying themselves to seed, fertilise and cut the club’s two fields, cut hedges, pick up rubbish from and clean the stands, clean and paint changing rooms, make repairs and, in general, use their skills in a wide variety of ways. Several individuals have devoted so much of their lives to the cause, and such voluntary input has also, of course, helped the club save thousands of pounds. In short, it is fair to say that they are rugby heroes!
