It was announced that Matt had first signed for the Cornish Pirates on a one-year contract just ahead of the 2023/24 season, which was one when he very much impressed. Indeed, in making 26 appearances he scored 13 tries, including being the ‘Try of the Season’ winner. He also won the ‘Sportsman of the Year’ and ‘Supporters’ Player of the Season’ trophies, and at the end of the campaign was deservedly selected in the Championship clubs’ Team of the Season.
Starting rugby when aged six for an academy in Zimbabwe called Sharks Kids, which was run by Brendon Dawson who has held the head coach role in Zimbabwe, Matt was educated at Whitestone Primary School and then Falcon College before attending Hartpury University where he did his Undergraduate Degree in Sports Business Management, followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management.
Matt has represented Zimbabwe in two World Cup qualifiers, one in 2019 and another in 2022, and he has previously played for Hartpury RFC in the Championship, plus had a brief loan spell at Worcester Warriors. He has also in the past represented Zimbabwe Goshawks in the Currie Cup competition.
Influences in Matt’s career, and in everything that he does, have been his very close family who all still live in Zimbabwe, whilst his partner girlfriend also plays a massive role in giving him support.
Matt’s dad is a former player and both his uncles have played for Zimbabwe. As for other sports, Matt likes to play golf and to fish, plus he has represented his country at cricket through the age groups. Indeed, it was a close decision in deciding whether he wanted to concentrate on cricket or rugby. Thankfully, he chose the latter!
