It was in July 2023 that centre Ioan signed for the Cornish Pirates.

After first playing rugby for Pontypridd under 11s, Ioan continued to represent his hometown club right up to senior level, whilst he was educated at Pontypridd High School and then, to further his studies, at Coleg y Cymoedd.

Impressing for Pontypridd and for Wales in the under 20s Six Nations, Ioan became a member of the Cardiff Academy. He had displayed maturity and leadership and would make his senior Cardiff Rugby debut in a Heineken Champions Cup double-header played against Toulouse and Harlequins in December 2021. Cornish ‘Pirate’ Alex Everett also played for Cardiff Rugby in the match versus Toulouse.

When Ioan signed for the Cornish Pirates, the club’s joint head coach Gavin Cattle was aware that he had already gained considerable experience. He also said: “Ioan can play either centre position but is predominantly a 13, who is very experienced in that channel defensively. As a bonus, he also has a useful left peg as well.”

Away from rugby, Ioan has always had an interest in football plus several other sports as well. He has also taken up golf which, in his own words, is not going as he would have wanted. Hey, stick with it, Ioan, stick with it!
