After it was first confirmed in September 2023 that Aussie Hugh had signed for the Cornish Pirates on a one-year contract, he soon made quite an impression for the club and in total made 23 appearances during his first season. Also, as was fully deserved, he was one of five players selected for the Championship clubs’ Team of the Season.

Having first played rugby at the age of six for Orange City rugby club in Orange, Hugh was later educated at St. Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill, New South Wales, and would play for Australia Schools and the Wallabies under 18s side. He has also played for Sydney University and for New South Wales Waratahs, been a member of the Junior Wallabies squad, and in 2022-23 featured in Japan for NEC Green Rockets Tokatsu.

On his arrival in Cornwall, Hugh was keen to quickly integrate, and on the very next day made his first training session. Cornish Pirates’ joint head coach Alan Paver was thrilled to welcome him, feeling the move was a good one for an aspiring and gifted young player, and for the club, although Alan was quick to offer words of advice – warning him to make sure that in our occasional conditions he has his long studs!

Hugh has always appreciated the support of his family, whilst to relax he enjoys hanging out with his mates and playing a little golf.
