It was confirmed ahead of the 2023-24 season that Dan would be dual registered from Exeter Chiefs with the Cornish Pirates.
Dan first played rugby at the age of six at Llantwit Fardre RFC, whilst an interesting educational path saw him attend Castellau Primary School, Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg, Kellet International School of Hong Kong, and then Millfield School before going to Exeter University. Along the way, besides playing for Llantwit Fardre, Dan lists his clubs as Hong Kong Football Club, Exeter University, and Exeter Chiefs where he made his top-flight debut in March 2021, when coming off the bench in the team’s 47-31 home victory against Leicester Tigers.
Influences in Dan’s career inevitably include his dad Paul John, a former Cardiff, Pontypridd, and Wales player who was also head coach of the Wales team that in 2009 lifted the Rugby World Cup Sevens trophy – former ‘Pirate’ Rhodri McAtee played in the team. Also, Dan’s grandad, Dennis John, is a former Pontypridd coach and caretaker coach of Wales.
Away from rugby, Dan played youth football for Cardiff City FC, plus he
represented Wales in Cross Country, Track and Field and Combined Events at age grade level.
