This Saturday’s Cornish Pirates versus London Scottish game in the Championship Cup is an all-important one, with the kick-off at the earlier time of 2pm.
There should be no lack of incentive for the Pirates, remembering that they have been beaten twice by ‘Scottish’ this season – once in the Cup and once in the league – both matches played away.
Reaching this final Round 6 encounter in Pool 3, quarter-final spots are already guaranteed for London Scottish (presently on 19 competition points) and both the Pirates and Nottingham (each on 16 points), however it is achieving a result to provide the bonus of a home quarter-final tie that is now the focus. There will be various permutations to concentrate minds.
Changes for the Pirates this week includes returns to the starting line-up for full-back AJ Cant, half-backs Javier Rojas Alvarez and Jean-Baptist Bruzulier, flanker Fa’atiga Lemalu, skipper Brett Beukeboom, and front-rowers Tom Cowan-Dickie and Jack Andrew.
Ahead of the game, Cornish Pirates’ Director of Rugby Chris Stirling has commented:
London Scottish deservedly beat us in the first Cup fixture of the season, and more recently they snatched victory from us right at the end of the league match encounter. We didn’t play poorly in that game, it’s just that they played well on the back of a thumping away defeat to Hartpury the week before.
As for this weekend we need to be aware once more, because heavily beaten at Nottingham last week London Scottish could prove dangerous opponents yet again.
We are expecting nothing less than a pretty determined performance from them, as they not only look to put right the wrongs of their last performance but because they also hold confidence in having beaten us twice already this season.
Chris added:
There should be a good-sized crowd on Saturday, and in matches such as this our supporters – the 16th man – can play their part. It is a game not to be missed.
