The Cornish Pirates can now officially confirm that hooker Sam Matavesi has gone on loan to French club Stade Toulousain, known as Toulouse.
Cornish-born Fiji international Sam, aged 27, has been signed by the famous French Top 14 club to the end of June, however he will return to England for forthcoming important Royal Navy matches.
Although not available to play in the Cornish Pirates three remaining league games, as announced just before Christmas, Sam has signed a contract for the next two seasons.
With reference to this latest news, Cornish Pirates’ co-coach Alan Paver has said:
We are delighted for Sam that he has the opportunity to go over to France and play for Toulouse, with the prospect to be involved in final stages of the Top 14 this season and possibly some European action.
I think it is such a massive thing for a young player to have these experiences and we are more than happy to let him go off and sample that. However, we are expecting him back for pre-season so all supporters out there should be at ease, and like he did international-wise I think when he goes away and comes back he’ll be a better player and a better man for it.
