Having completed his Hartpury College and University education, 22-year-old Maliq Holden is the latest gifted player to sign a one-year contract for the Cornish Pirates.
Liverpool-born Maliq, a full-back who can also play at wing or outside centre, has represented Netherlands at under 17, 18, and 19 levels, plus England Students. During the past two years he has also twice been a BUCS Final winner with Hartpury University, scoring a try in win against Exeter University at Twickenham in 2017, and repeating the exercise against Cardiff Met this year.
Maliq, who was a member of Liverpool FC’s academy, only took up rugby aged 13 when he was educated at the British School in the Netherlands. He has also played for Bristol United in the A League.
Cornish Pirates coach Gavin Cattle has commented:
Maliq is a gifted player, who is strong in contact, possesses speed and is also good under the high ball.
Study has been a priority for him, but now coming out of university he has an opportunity to play full-time rugby, which we are happy to give him – hoping too that he will flourish with the Pirates.
