To start this popular annual event on Thursday evening, supporters and sponsors present were able to watch the Cornish Pirates’ squad in impressive training action on the Mennaye Field, before ‘One & All’ then gathered in the Yeomans marquee.
A free hog roast meal was provided courtesy of Roseworthy Farms, with St. Austell Brewery also kindly providing the beer, before joint head coach Alan Paver then firstly welcomed new CEO, Sally Pettipher, who spoke of her passion for the Pirates and appreciation of all who support the team, including the various sponsors.
As usual, PA announcer Phil Westren next took the opportunity to officially welcome everyone, plus he commended members of last season’s successful squad, and the coaches, prior to announcing the names of new squad members present who, in turn, each stood and acknowledged appreciation with a wave. Phil also announced well received ‘hot off the press’ news, confirming that former prop Jay Tyack, had just signed a contract for the coming season.
To applause, joint head coach Gavin Cattle officially confirmed that John Stevens would again captain the team, and he spoke too of the efforts made by all the players during pre-season. Initial signs were very encouraging, and the new faces were bedding in well.
The ever loyal and popular Cadgwith Singers ‘struck up’ with a repertoire of favourite Cornish songs, before the enjoyable and informative evening finally concluded with everyone mingling and talking together, as they now look forward to what promises to be another exciting season ahead.
