Louie’s Pirates Appointment

Following the recent departure of Chris Morgan, the Cornish Pirates can confirm the appointment of Louie Tonkin in the role of Assistant Coach.

Born in Cornwall, but raised in Wales, 38-year-old Louie is a former lock forward who played for UWIC RFC, Swansea, Coventry, and Llandovery.

Gaining a Degree in Sports Science at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC), which is nowadays known as Cardiff Metropolitan University, the now Level 4 Coach was a Scarlets Academy Coach (2009-13) Head Coach at Carmarthen Quins & Pontypool RFC (2012-2016), Director of Rugby at Cardiff University, Forwards Coach at Wales Students, Director of Rugby at Bahrain Rugby (2016-19), and Exeter Chiefs Academy Coach (2019-21).

Speaking highly of Louie, Cornish Pirates’ joint Head Coach, Alan Paver, has commented:

“Having the pleasure of connecting with Louie over the past couple of years or so when he worked at Exeter Chiefs, a strong bond and rapport has been built and he is a good guy.

“Louie has always shown an interest in different environments, discussing tactics, and looking at technical aspects of the game. He also has a real passion for the development of players, so when he showed an interest to come on board, we took it seriously right away, with thanks also to the Chiefs for enabling the move to happen smoothly.”

Alan added:

“His knowledge is fantastic, and he has integrated in very well, and although already experienced he still has a hunger to explore and learn.”

Louie’s family, based in West Wales, have a Welsh/Italian background, and his wife Hayley is South African. As for hobbies and interests, he much enjoys travel, playing the guitar, hiking with Hayley around the Cornish Coast – and Braais and Ale at home on weekends!
