We can confirm today that club legend John Stevens, has retired from professional rugby after an incredible 13 year career with the Cornish Pirates.
Cornishman Stevens, made 152 appearances for the Pirates including 23 tries, battled back to fitness after an 18 month layoff from a serious knee injury – a huge achievement in itself, to make 5 appearances in his final term.
Known for his abrasive style and all court game, the back rower was named Cornish Pirates captain ahead of the 2022-2023 season and went on to make the Champ Rugby Team of the Season a year later, having helped the Pirates to a highest ever league finish of 2nd, after a host of memorable individual displays.
Joint Head Coach Gavin Cattle, paid tribute to John’s stellar Pirates career.
Someone who possesses true Cornish grit. John has been on some journey with us.
He wasn’t the biggest when we first set eyes on him. Paves and myself were still players back then but as a coach to see him grow into a great captain that leads from the front has been a joy to watch.
Tough, skilful and physical. I don’t say this lightly but I feel he one the best we have ever had. Injuries hampered his progress but that’s rugby and see him overcome an horrific injury to make his 150th appearance sums up what he’s about. John has been inspirational and he has put one hell of a shift in for this club.
Stevens also spoke with pride reflecting on his career.
“It has always been a privilege to be able to play professional sport in the place I call home and to captain this team. For that I am and always will be very grateful. I also want to thank everyone who helped and supported me in my return from injury over the last few seasons and for the support towards the testimonial.”
There is still an opportunity to see Stevens at The Mennaye one more time this season, as he takes his bow for the John Stevens Testimonial on Saturday June 13th (Kick Off 1:30pm). Get your tickets by clicking here to give John a final send off!
