Bradfords Community Cup Competition

Inaugural Event Proves a Hit!

The Cornish Pirates are pleased to confirm that their inaugural Bradfords Community Cup competition event, which got underway at the Mennaye Field, Penzance, on Wednesday, proved a terrific hit.

Sponsored by club sponsor Bradfords Building Supplies, the exciting event brought together some 200 children – boys & girls from years 4/5/6 – from Primary schools around West Cornwall, who were warmly welcomed by Cornish Pirates’ joint head coaches Alan Paver and Gavin Cattle. The Festival of Rugby then commenced, with each team coached by its very own Cornish Pirates player.

Following the rugby played, at the end of which all the players were presented with T-shirts and medals, two teams will now be selected to show off their skills in a Finals Day on Saturday 23rd April, when the Cornish Pirates are also at home to Doncaster Knights in the Championship Cup competition.

Speaking on behalf of Bradfords Building Supplies, their Sales & Development Manager for West Cornwall, Nigel Smitheram, said:

“We were delighted with the number of schools participating, with the fantastic weather, and delighted also to be part of it as the Bradfords family.

“Helped by coaching from the Cornish Pirates players it was noticeable that the schools just got better and better during the day and it was clearly a great success both for the Pirates and Bradfords.

“Overall, it was simply a fantastic event, and we were chuffed to bits.”

Bradfords Building Supplies’ Regional Director for Devon & Cornwall, Cath Mullin, also added:

“I must echo Nigel’s comments, as it was just a wonderful day and ‘yes’ we couldn’t have asked for better weather.

“It was great to see the number of school teams playing and it is also great because it is so close to our heart. If you look at Bradfords as a company we have been serving our local community since 1770, and this is what it is all about.

“Seeing the children with the T-shirts and the medals has just been super and taking in the excitement and noise level you just know they have had a great day, which really says it all!”

The following schools participated in the event:

Alverton Community Primary, Connor Downs Academy, Gulval School, Heamoor Community Primary School, Mousehole School, Newlyn School, Penpol School, Pensans Community Primary School, St. Erth School, St. Just Primary School, St. Maddern’s C of E School, St. Mary’s C of E Primary School, and Sennen School

Cornish Pirates ‘player’ coaching on the day were:

Harry Bazalgette, Syd Blackmore, AJ Cant, Danny Cutmore, Joe Elderkin, Antonio Kiri Kiri, Alex O’Meara, Carwyn Penny, Arwel Robson, Sam Rodman, Robin Wedlake, Bear Williams.

And the player referees were: Tom Channon, Tom Duncan, Alex Schwarz, and John Stevens.
