The Cornish Pirates can confirm the signing of hooker Syd Blackmore on a one-year contract.
Aged 24, Syd is a former Wales under 20s backrower who, playing for Ampthill in the past couple of seasons, has successfully converted to hooker.
The son of a former Wales prop, the late Steve Blackmore, he played his junior rugby with Llandaff RFC, and later went on to successfully captain Hartpury College. He has also in the past played for Bath Academy, Loughborough University, and Cinderford.
Delighted to welcome Syd on board, Cornish Pirates’ joint head coach Alan Paver has commented:
Syd has been one of the stand-out performers at hooker in the Championship this year and will arrive as someone highly recommended.
He has had good tutelage at Ampthill, and though a former backrower has had a lot of time in the saddle this past couple of years to gain experience at hooker. Playing week in and week out with some experienced players has also helped him.
Alan added:
We are delighted to welcome another solid front rower on board who is young enough to continue his development and therefore further make his mark in the game.
Looking forward to his forthcoming arrival at the Mennaye Field, Syd also said:
Naturally, I am looking forward to getting down to Cornwall and embracing the challenges ahead. It is an exciting and fantastic opportunity, one that I am aiming to grasp, and I can’t wait to play at the Mennaye in front of a hopefully full crowd.
Also, at this time, I would like to thank Ampthill for having aided my development over the last few seasons.
