The Cornish Pirates can confirm that hooker Sam Matavesi has been called up to the Flying Fijians squad for their forthcoming autumn tour of Europe.
The 26-year-old, who won the first of his three caps for Fiji in 2013, has been named in coach John McKee’s 30-man squad for a tour that will see games played in November against Scotland, Uruguay and France.
Cornish-born, Sam is a former Camborne, Plymouth Albion, Racing Metro (Paris) and Redruth player. He signed for the Pirates from the Reds last December, and in making 20 appearances for the club to date has also scored 10 tries.
Cornish Pirates co-coach Alan Paver is delighted for him, and has commented:
Sam has developed superbly as a hooker and could play at any level.
Still displaying the aspects of his game acquired when he played in the back-row, he is talented with ball in hand, good over the ball, and all of our boys are over the moon for him.
