Cornish Pirates and SUEZ recycling and recovery UK are proud to announce Gorran School as the winner of the 2026 Sustainability Flag Competition, a challenge designed to inspire local students to think about recycling, reuse, and the environment.
The competition formed part of a six‑week sustainability education programme delivered in local schools by the Cornish Pirates, with over 100 students taking part. The programme covered key themes including waste reduction, reuse and effective recycling.”
The winning flag was selected for its creativity, powerful sustainability message, and clear link to Cornwall’s natural environment. Students from Gorran School were invited onto the pitch on Saturday 28 March to celebrate their success in front of supporters, families and community partners with their winning flag design being proudly displayed..
“We were blown away by the quality and imagination of the entries,” said Mark Hillson, PFI General Manager at SUEZ. “We are proud to work alongside the Cornish Pirates to provide hands‑on, engaging learning experiences that bring sustainability to life and help students understand the impact of their everyday actions.”
Head of Commercial at Cornish Pirates, Ross Hancock, said “As a club deeply rooted in our Cornish community, we’re delighted to stand alongside SUEZ in helping young people understand sustainability. Today’s event shows how sport, education and environmental responsibility can come together in a powerful way.”
The programme aims to encourage schools to book tours at SUEZ’s Bodmin and St Dennis visitor centres to continue their sustainability journey and learn more about how they can help to protect the environment..
“We hope this experience leaves a lasting impression,” added Sarah Cotton, Community Liaison Manager at SUEZ “By helping students understand what happens to waste and how they can play a part, we can encourage young people to think more sustainably.”
