Saturday’s Cornish Pirates game at the Mennaye Field provided due cause for celebration – and not just because the Pirates won 40-5 against Coventry.
With the sun shining as if to bless the occasion, for the first time since early in 2020 mascots and young rugby players participated in the afternoon’s event.
Although not at a stage yet, because of Covid restrictions, for mascots to accompany the Cornish Pirates captain and players on the pre kick off emergence from the tunnel, along with young players from the Pirates under 9s and under 10s they were though able to together form the Guard of Honour and wave flags, which provided a returning welcome spectacle. The happy mascot trio comprised Pirate Pack member Ernest, Alana and Ollie – oh, and we must not forget Captain Benbow!
As for half-time, again it is not possible at this stage for mini-rugby exhibitions to take place. Okay, no worries, as led by Captain Benbow all the enthusiastic youngsters participated in a pitch walk – around the ground inside of the stanchion rail. They thoroughly enjoyed it, with the bumper crowd of supporters also instinctively reacting to provide real encouragement.
Not looking for, but inevitably demanding attention at the Mennaye Field, were two high profile and inspirational former members of the Pirates’ youth section. Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs) and Kyle Moyle (Gloucester) were in opposition in the Premiership at Gloucester’s Kingsholm ground the night before, however here they were – back home. Of interest, the pair were also in the same mini-rugby team from about the age of seven, as was Luke Cowan-Dickie – now, what a team that was!
In light of the above information, the Cornish Pirates are about to re-open the booking for our Match Day Experience! Look out for Tuesday’s (tomorrow’s) media release.
