Coach Alan Paver is Pleased

After the Cornish Pirates announced at Thursday evening’s ‘Meet the Players’ event the names of six players who will be dual registered with Exeter Chiefs for this coming season, joint head coach Alan Paver was very pleased. Commenting with reference to the news, he said:

“The excellent relationship with Exeter Chiefs continues, which means we have a batch of strong and up and coming young men who we are always eager to once again see what they have got.”

Making up the six are four players who were dual registered last season, namely back-rower Lewis Pearson, prop Patrick Schickerling, lock Cory Teague, and centre/full-back Tommy Wyatt. The new faces are props James Kenny and Alfie Petch who have both featured for England under 20s. (Their full profiles will appear soon on the Cornish Pirates website www.cornish-pirates.com)

Lewis unfortunately picked up an injury early last season, so the Pirates will be looking forward to welcome him back quite in the next few weeks. Former Namibian under 20s international Patrick showed his potential and was a try-scorer for the Pirates in their end of season defeat away to Jersey Reds, whilst young Cornishman Cory has developed physically and as a valued squad member is expected to push on stake a claim for the jersey. As for Tommy, he is a considered a great athlete with a fine attitude, who should go from strength to strength.

Speaking specifically about new arrivals James and Alfie, Alan said:

“Arriving with a good pedigree, they are thought of very highly. The likely expectation is to get them to a position where they could challenge for a starting jersey, which in my mind is realistic for them. However, there is competition in the front-row, and they are not going to get it easy.

“What we have seen so far is that they again have a good attitude and are physically able. Also, of course, coming from a fantastic environment they have been very well coached, so it will be interesting to see how the competition plays out over the course of the season.”
