As stated by the new Cornish Pirates Board of Directors back in September 2016, we have increasingly been talent spotting local players, which has seen notable increase in the percentage of Cornish bred players becoming part of the Cornish Pirates squad.

Coaches Alan Paver and Gavin Cattle are delighted to see this happening. Speaking highly of all the Cornish bred ‘lads’, Alan has commented:

It’s just been lovely to see so many lads from about the county getting an opportunity to put on the Pirates jersey and play for our professional side. Not only are they gifted players, they are always fully committed and hardworking. Our win away to Richmond last weekend epitomised just where we are at. Of the players that performed, a total of 10 were Cornish bred and it was a terrific effort. Underlying our present position, three were guys who we brought in on loan, namely Chris Fuca from Redruth and Kieran Westlake from Camborne, plus Danny Toolan from the Pirates Amateurs who had an absolute step up and did very well. We always knew we were going to be backs against the wall, however with so many Cornish boys in the side we at the same time knew there would be no lack of grunt and team spirit to perform.

Alan added:

We are hoping people from around the county recognise our efforts and rally behind these players, because this really is a place providing such opportunities to young Cornish men and long may it continue.

In this season’s fully registered Cornish Pirates squad, a third are proudly Cornish bred. The actual figure is 11.
