After a 3-week break and having ended 2024 on a high after recording a worthy 33-17 victory away against Ampthill, which made it a pleasing five league wins on the trot, the fifth-placed Cornish Pirates return to action with a first game in 2025 away to sixth-placed Hartpury this Saturday, where the kick-off is at 2.30pm.

The Cornish Pirates side shows several changes to last time out, including the inclusion of Irish lock Fintan Coleman. Signing for the club this week on a presently short-term deal, he will partner Josh King in the second row. Also, there are two other new faces in the squad, namely towering replacement lock Alfie Bell who is dual registered with Exeter Chiefs, and replacement backrower Chris Mills who is on loan from Redruth.

Flanker Alex Everett makes a welcome return from injury and will start in the ‘6’ shirt and fit again centre Joe Elderkin takes a place on the bench. Matt McNab is still unavailable with a lower leg injury, so Robin Wedlake gets a starting role on the wing. Among other changes James French is named at tight-head prop and Tomiwa Agbongbon at openside wing forward.

Commenting ahead of this weekend’s game, Cornish Pirates’ joint head coach Gavin Cattle said:

“Coming back after the break I think the rest was needed, and the mood following a good run of results has understandably been a positive one.

Having said that though, we have two tough challenges in the league ahead of us, starting with the trip to Hartpury this Saturday before then travelling to Ealing the weekend after.

“Hartpury have a stable pack and a stable team, and they are also playing well as we experienced against them in the Cup earlier this season. Their pack and general physicality proved superior to us in the second half of that game, and that’s the challenge ahead of us going up there on Saturday.

“Our squad selection shows several changes this week, with certain loan players recalled by their clubs, a number returning from injury, plus there two or three new faces.”

The full Cornish Pirates selection for Saturday is as follows:

Cornish Pirates:   15 Will Trewin 14 Arthur Relton 13 Charlie McCaig 12 Harry Yates 11 Robin Wedlake 10 Bruce Houston 9 Dan Hiscocks; 1 Billy Young 2 Harry Hocking 3 James French 4 Josh King 5 Fintan Coleman 6 Alex Everett 7 Tomiwa Agbongbon 8 Hugh Bokenham (captain).
