The Cornish Pirates have selected a much-changed squad for their visit to Ealing Trailfinders this Saturday (ko 3pm), with certain alterations necessary because a trio comprising backrower Tomi Agbongbon, lock Matt Cannon, and centre/wing Harry Yates are dual registered with the Trailfinders and are not permitted to play in the match.
In the backs, Harry Ascherl on loan from Exeter Chiefs, and who made his debut for the Pirates off the bench against Chinnor last weekend, will partner Chester Ribbons in the centre, and Matty Ward is named on the wing.
As for the forwards, Rory Suttor and Jack Forsythe are the selected wing forward pairing, whilst in the second row former Penzance & Newlyn RFC youth team product Oscar Beckerleg, who has played for England under 20s, and is on loan from Exeter Chiefs, is named to make his debut.
On the bench, two backs on loan from the Chiefs are included. One is Welsh scrum-half Orson James who has already made two appearances as a replacement for the Pirates this season, whilst the other is fly-half Ben Coen. Ready to make his debut, as per Oscar Beckerleg he is another who has represented England at under 20s level.
Speaking ahead of what is a 1st versus 6th Round 24 contest in Elior Champ Rugby, Pirates’ coach Joe Walsh said:
“Firstly, I felt that last Saturday’s win against Chinnor was our most satisfying of the season. They are quality team so for us to put on such a performance was really pleasing and it sets us up for our last few games.
“As for this week, Ealing will clearly provide tough opposition, but despite suffering a hefty defeat away against them last year we did score four good tries and came away with a point.
“We will obviously miss the three players who are unable to feature for us this weekend. However, we will be doing the best to populate that space, and I am sure the guys who go out there will want to rip in and put up a good performance in a Pirates jersey, remembering too that anything can happen on the day.
Joe added:
“With reference to the fresh inclusions in our 23, we are once again grateful to Exeter Chiefs for helping to bolster our selected squad. They are gifted young players, who we have quickly endeavoured to get bedded in and to get a grasp of what we are aiming for.”
