A next fixture for the Cornish Pirates is this coming Sunday, the 1st December, when on a return to Championship Cup action Nottingham will be visitors to the Mennaye Field (ko 2.30pm).
This Round 4 match is the first of the three remaining Pool 3 fixtures to be played by the Pirates in the competition (all at home), them having earlier in the season lost one, 24-20 at London Scottish, and won two – 48-0 away to Yorkshire Carnegie and 42-7 at Nottingham.
Presently second in Pool 3, the Cornish Pirates will be keen to ultimately achieve a quarter final place, it the three pool winners, runners up and best two third placed teams who will qualify for the knock-out stage.
Selected to skipper the Pirates this weekend is fly-half Will Cargill. Having scored over 480 points since joining the Pirates in 2015, he is about to proudly make his 100th appearance for the club. On the wing Harry Davey is lined up to play his first competitive match for the team, which is something replacement prop Will Norton will be keen to emulate, whilst named to play their first actual games in a Pirates shirt are fit again flanker Antonio Kiri Kiri and second-row forward Cian Romaine.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s fixture, coach Gavin Cattle has commented:
Everyone is refreshed following a week off and then a visit on Monday to Geevor Mine, where the squad enjoyed learning a part of Cornwall’s heritage.
Training well since, we have made some changes for this weekend and am really excited about the block of Cup fixtures. These games will also give players their opportunity to put their hands up for the shirt.
It’s impossible to field more or less the same XV every week, so it is useful to try different combinations. Plus, with three home Cup matches on the trot, our aim is obviously to win every one.
Cornish Pirates’ home matches in the Cup are ‘All Pay’, but with entry for those who purchase their tickets in advance being just £10, sit or stand anywhere on a first come first served basis.
Advance tickets can be purchased on-line at https://cornish-pirates.com/tickets/ or from the club’s ticket office, open Monday to Friday from 9am to 12 noon. Entry on the day will be £15 and £1 for children under 16.
Besides the rugby, post-match entertainment in the ITEC sponsored marquee will be provided by both the Cadgwith Singers and popular folk singer Will Keating.
