The Cornish Pirates will end 2017 with a Championship contest on New Year’s Eve, at home to Jersey Reds (ko 2pm).
Having lost their last four fixtures against the Islanders, three in the league and one in the Cup, it is a trend the Cornish Pirates will be keen to start to reverse, and in front of what will be a bumper-sized crowd.
For this seventh versus ninth in the league clash, the one change in the Cornish Pirates starting XV from the side that ran out against Bristol Rugby last weekend sees Dan Koster selected on the wing, whilst named on the bench is Sam Matavesi who will be keen to make his first appearance in a Pirates shirt.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s game, coach Alan Paver has said:
Jersey Reds form a capable side, with an able pack of forwards. They maul well, and their scrum is also particularly strong. Because they play a pretty pragmatic game, and are not too dissimilar to us, we expect an even contest, so it’ll probably come down to a couple of crucial decisions. The pitch will likely cut up pretty badly and nullify the attack for both sides, so we expect a bit of a slug out. However, I’m also hopeful that we are in the right place mentally to give us the best opportunity, and with our home support will aim to end the year on a high.
