Following their Championship win against Doncaster Knights, a next game for the Cornish Pirates is at home this coming Sunday, the 12th November, against Hartpury RFC (2.30pm).
Promoted from National One at the end of last season, Hartpury have made impressive progress through the English rugby pyramid since entry at the bottom level in 2004. They have also been quick to find their feet competing in the Greene King IPA Championship, and at the end of Round 7 were in seventh place.
The Cornish Pirates first ever fixture against Hartpury RFC was just a couple of weeks ago, when in an opening British & Irish Cup game of the season they emerged 35-19 winners away. For the league, however, a much sterner contest is expected.
With both Dan Koster and Brett Beukeboom having picked up knocks, there are two changes in personnel from the XV that started at Doncaster. Nicolas Coronel will make his first Championship start, partnering Pete Laverick in the centre, and with a fit again Alex Cheesman returning at flanker, Josh Caulfield moves back up into the second-row.
Number 8 Tom Lawday will take the skipper’s armband for the first time, whilst recovered from injury Tom Duncan is a welcome face on the bench. Also named among the replacements are player/coach Alan Paver and back Harry Strong who, if he features, will be making his maiden start for the Pirates.
Commenting ahead of Sunday’s game, Cornish Pirates’ coach Gavin Cattle has said:
Although we beat Hartpury in the Cup, it is inevitably going to be much tougher this weekend in the Championship. We are expecting a lot more from them, as a number of their more experienced players come into the frame, whilst from our perspective it is important that all the work we put in prior to the Doncaster game continues, in our effort to move forward.
