This Sunday will see the Cornish Pirates welcome Jersey Reds to the Mennaye Field for what is clearly an important third versus fourth contest in the RFU Championship. The kick-off is at 2pm.
When the Reds last visited the Mennaye Field, which was one year to the day on the 27th February, 2021, the Pirates won what was a ‘friendly’ encounter 26-13, whilst from the last meeting between the two sides it was the Reds who emerged 15-5 winners in an RFU Championship contest played on the island last November. Also, of general interest, the last time the Pirates won a league match at home against Sunday’s opponents was a 16-10 result back in December 2015.
Changes in the Pirates squad this week sees Jack Andrew selected at loose-head prop and Caleb Montgomery on the blind side berth. Matt Bolwell moves to the open side, whilst fresh faces on the bench are those of backrower Will Gibson, prop Sam Rodman, and hooker Syd Blackmore.
For Sunday’s encounter another good-sized crowd is expected, with the potential for it to be the biggest of the season. Looking forward to the occasion, Cornish Pirates’ joint head coach Alan Paver has commented:
“I am sure Jersey will arrive pretty confident and that the outcome will likely once again come down to small margins. With it so close at the top of the league there is certainly everything to play for, so supporters should be in for a treat.
“We always strive to make the Mennaye Field our fortress, and if our prep this week has been right then we will look to hit Sunday with everything we have got. It also very much hoped that there will be a big crowd present, as the energy and vibe is then noticeably different.”
Alan added:
“Our present group of players are special to us and they have responded really well this season, so I would urge everyone to come along, make your presence felt, and help create that special Mennaye atmosphere.”
Tickets for Sunday’s match will be available at the gates on the day (open 12 noon), whilst in the meantime they can also be purchased on-line. For further information please visit: www.cornish-pirates.com/tickets
