Following on from their comfortable 62-7 opening Championship Cup win away to Richmond last weekend, the Cornish Pirates are on the road again this Saturday, when in Round 2 they will make a first ever visit to face Caldy RFC.
Promoted from National 1 at the end of last season, Caldy’s home ground is the Paton Field on the Wirral, where they also won their Cup opener, 17-13, against Ampthill last Saturday.
The Cornish Pirates selection for this weekend shows four changes in their starting XV from the side that ran out at Richmond. Named at full-back, Will Trewin will make his first competitive match appearance for the Pirates, whilst Shae Tucker is selected to partner Tommy Wyatt in the centre. In the forwards, prop Matt Johnson will be keen to return to playing action, and after coming off the bench at the ‘RAG’ skipper John Stevens once again takes a place in the backrow. Also listed among the replacements is Bear Williams, who made one appearance for the Pirates in last season’s Cup competition.
Speaking ahead of Saturday, Cornish Pirates’ joint head coach Gavin Cattle has commented:
“We have been pushed for numbers in training with some of the dual reg boys featuring for Exeter at the minute, plus we obviously have some lads carrying bags and bruises. However, our aim this week has been to replicate what we did last week, and just work on the foundations of our game and get better at what we do.
“We were happy overall with our performance against Richmond although, as has been mentioned, we expected a sterner test. As for Caldy, coming up from National 1 they have a more settled team, and with an experienced pack of forwards will set a different and tougher challenge.”
