Following the announcement made in July, 2011, that flanker Sam Betty was departing Cornwall to join Premiership side Worcester Warriors, the Cornish Pirates reacted quickly to acquire the services of Charlie on a dual registration agreement with Exeter Chiefs.

Kent born Charlie, who has also made appearances on the wing, has previously played for Taunton and Minehead Barbarians where he only started playing rugby at the age of 15.

His main education was at West Somerset Community College and at the age 17 he went to New Zealand, playing for East Coast. Also, in 2008, he returned to New Zealand, this time playing for the Carterton club and also honoured to be selected for Wairapa Bush.

Charlie was the fifth player from Exeter to be dual registered with the Cornish Pirates in 2011, joining colleagues Tom Cowan-Dickie, Dave Ewers, Lloyd Fairbrother and Sam Hill.

Commenting at the time, Cornish Pirates high performance manager Chris Stirling said:

"When recently discussing dual registered players with Rob Baxter, Charlie's name was mentioned and he was strongly recommended.

At that stage, however, we had no opening for a '7', but with Sam moving on it has opened up an opportunity for a player who is rated very highly."
