When Gavin Cattle returned to Llanelli Jim McKay also went to Wales to sign the experienced Canadian international Ed Fairhurst from Cardiff Blues.

He arrived straight from representing his country in the World Cup in France and made his debut in a high octane cross-Tamar derby against Exeter at Camborne.

He got off to a sensational start by fashioning a try with a flick pass with almost his first touch of the ball. He soon set up a close understanding with Irishman Gareth Steenson as his fly-half and the pair gave a reassuring solidity and shape to the team.

The following year he faced a serious challenge for his position from the bouncy Nicky Griffiths but continued to play in his normal unflappable way.

At the end of this second season he returned to Canada where he continued to accumulate international caps.
