Cadgwith fisherman & Prop Tommy Phillips is the latest hot young Cornish prospect to join the Cornish Pirates Player Development Foundation (PDF).
Tommy, who lives and fishes out of Cadgwith, was in the Cornwall side that beat Lancashire 18-13 at Twickenham in May to win the Bill Beaumont Trophy.
He also played for the England Counties under 20s team on their tour to Hungary.
Tommy started playing in the same Helston youth team as Brad Howe and together they worked their way through the age groups playing for Cornwall.
“We feel Tommy is another Cornish youngster with a big future ahead of him.” said Ian Davies Director of Rugby
Having had a strong showing last season in National Two the basic rugby foundations are in place and it is now just a case of layering conditioning, game understanding and playing with a greater intensity on top to aid Tommy in pushing on in the professional game.”
The PDF has become instrumental in developing the senior squad from within and the furthering the aim to have a majority of Cornish players in the squad.
We hope that even more will not only see the fruits of the PDF, but the rationale in the Cornish Pirates championing this route for young talent.
Fundraising for the PDF is ongoing and your contribution will be invaluable.
