A product of the Penzance & Newlyn RFC's youth section, Tom initially developed his rugby through the club and also at Mounts Bay School, as did his younger brother Luke.

As a mobile and powerful prop forward, Tom impressed at various age group levels for Cornwall and the South West, whilst an early highlight was in 2009 when he scored a try for Truro College in their impressive 39-18 win against St. Peter's (Gloucester) in the final of the prestigious Daily Mail RBS Cup competition, played at Twickenham. During his time at Truro College, he also much appreciated the help given him by Will Davies, Ricky Pellow and Robin Cowling.

In 2009-10, whilst with Exeter Chiefs England Rugby Academy, Tom had a loan spell playing for Redruth in National One, where he performed well. More importantly, however, it provided him with worthy senior experience ahead of first joining the Cornish Pirates back in 2010. Playing at hooker, he made his debut off the bench against Rotherham Titans in October, and in two seasons with the club he made 21 appearances.

Continuing his development Tom next moved to Plymouth Albion and then to Redruth again, during which time he was selected for England Counties. He was also proudly a member of Cornwall’s 2016 County Championship winning side.

After a one season return to Plymouth Albion for 2016-17, where the star performer was regarded as the stand-out hooker in National One, Tom took the opportunity to rejoin the Cornish Pirates. Commenting at the time, coach Alan Paver said: "Tom is a nuggety, mobile and no nonsense front-rower, who has already gained considerable experience. At the same time he also clearly has the potential to take his game to another level."
