Toby joined us from Nottingham having signed a two year contract in April 2017.

Having grown up in Cornwall he was looking forward to the chance of playing in front of family and friends “back home”, as well as in front of the passionate Mennaye faithful,

He first played rugby aged 13 at Penryn College, where he was coached by former Pirate Adrian Bick. He also played for Penryn RFC, where a friend’s dad, Anthony 'Stack' Hancock was another big influence.

He is an experienced Championship player, renowned for his work rate, physicality and passion.

His rugby has benefitted from being coached by Rob Baxter at Exeter Chiefs, Andre Bester at Rotherham Titans, both Martin Haag and former Munster man Ian Costello at Nottingham and Ricky Pellow at Truro College.

Before joining Rotherham Toby had a spell playing for Ampo Ordizia in Spain, where he was man-of-the-match when helping them lift the Kings Cup.

At Exeter University he took a degree in Sports science and then a Masters in Sports Psychology and Sociology.

Now back in Cornwall he has taken on a coaching role at Penryn to give something back to the club where it all began (during his time at Nottingham he spent two years coaching at West Bridgford in East Midlands 2)

He also enjoys keeping his young golden retriever ‘Oscar’ amused. It apparently makes recovery easier the day after a game – taking, in his own words “the big lad for a stroll!”
