Activity Aplenty at the Pirates Matchday

By Phil Westren

When the Cornish Pirates played Plymouth Albion in their final pre-season fixture on Saturday, there was much more than just the main rugby action taking place about the Mennaye Field.

Supporters enjoyed a range of refreshments, representatives from the Pirates youth section formed the Guard of Honour for the teams to run out through, and accompanying Cornish Pirates skipper Chris Morgan and fellow player Jack Andrew were young mascots Fletcher Marr and Billy Pascoe.

The half-time period saw two other well-known mascots meet up, namely Cornish Pirates’ famous mascot Captain Benbow and match day guest Swampy from the popular Camel Creek Adventure Park, and the enthusiastic Pirates under 9s also provided an exhibition of ‘tag’ rugby.

Finally, a match day collection worthily took place at half-time and on the exit gates in support of Penzance & Newlyn RFC’s youth section, which realised the fantastic sum of £621-80.

Speaking on behalf of the Pirates youth section, Chairman Cullam Osborne commented:

“With regards to Saturday’s collection, it went brilliantly, borne out by the fact that it looks like we have raised £621.80 according to my counting skills!!

“Our thanks are expressed to all the staff at the Cornish Pirates and to the generous supporters, as it is an amazing amount which far exceeded our expectations. We really are very grateful to you all!”

Cullam added:
“All of our young players involved on the day - the mascots, those who formed the Guard of Honour, the children that played at half-time game or helped with the collection - really enjoyed it, as did all the adult helpers and parents.”
