Test Series Drawn – But Rugby the Winner

By Phil Westren

So, the British Lions tour to New Zealand came to a sudden end on Saturday, the final test drawn 15-all, and the series also tied.

It all seemed a bit strange at the final whistle, however positive thoughts soon hit the mind, as it had all been thrilling to watch. The level of commitment, sportsmanship and respect (Mana!) on display was just terrific to witness. Rugby nuts will tell you that rugby union is the finest game of all, and the responses witnessed on and off the field on Saturday, and in a variety of ways, simply cemented that view.

Among the crowd on Saturday was Dicky Evans from the Cornish Pirates. Director Dicky (pictured third left with his wife Jytte) attended the match with the Chairman of The Chiefs (NZ), Dallas Fisher (standing at the back with glasses). Two other familiar West Country faces in the group are Plymouth Albion men Paddy Marsh (left) and Dave Venables (second right, pictured next to Dallas’s wife Helen).

And, of course, congratulations are expressed to our local boy Jack Nowell, a product of the Pirates youth section, and now of Exeter Chiefs, who made appearances off the bench in the last two test matches. Proper job Jack – we are all very proud of you!
