Alan & Gavin Lead CRFU Coaches & Officials Day

Alan Paver and Gavin Cattle took time out from their busy coaching schedule to lead last Sunday’s CRFU Coaches & Officials Day at Newquay Sports Centre.

With the general theme ‘Coaching and Officiating the Breakdown’, the inspirational pair, along with Match Officials Panel Manager Steve Harland, delivered sessions incorporating practical demonstrations to help improve the understanding of what factors affect decision making at the breakdown.

They looked at what is effective, safe and legal, and also the practical benefits of joint working between coaches and officials. All who attended clearly found it informative and useful.

Former Pirates hooker John Kimberley, who has coached at Bath and for Dorset & Wiltshire, was present. Contacting the Pirates since, he said:

“The Coaching Day was very informative, both around the breakdown and other areas that came up. My sincere thanks are expressed to both Alan and Gavin.”

A rugby supporter who also attended commented: “Although present as a supporter and rugby enthusiast, I found it no less fascinating for that.

“It was an excellent day, with lots of insight into recent law changes, and to Gavin and Alan’s views on coaching the breakdown. We not only had the benefit of their expertise in terms of defence and attack tactics, and what they are trying to achieve at the Pirates, but it also gave other coaches present some very useful ideas.”

“On the basis of Gavin and Alan’s evident enthusiasm and knowledge, the Pirates are in safe hands! It was terrific, too, that they both gave up their time to contribute to rugby in the county in this way. Well done and thanks to them both!”

The event was organised by the Cornwall RFU and Chris Hailey, Chairman of their Game Development Committee, in liaison with Mike Bratt, who is England Rugby’s Development Officer for Cornwall.
