Matt Evans has been a prolific try-scorer for both Canada and the Cornish Pirates in recent years, and playing for the ‘Canucks’ in Calgary on Saturday this fearsome finisher once again made his mark.
Canada beat Russia 46-21 at Calgary Rugby Park and Matt, playing at full-back, was a first half scorer.
This was Canada’s second RISEAsONE Summer Series test match, which followed a narrow 26-22 defeat against Japan just seven days earlier. That game was played at BC Place in Vancouver where former ‘Pirate’ Aaron Carpenter, playing at No. 8, scored a try in the match.
Canada’s final game in the Series is an eagerly awaited contest against Italy on Sunday. To be played at the BMO Field in Toronto, Matt and his colleagues will be keen to avenge a narrow 23-18 defeat suffered against the Azzurri in last year’s Rugby World Cup.
