With continuity the key, we are very pleased to announce the first player signings for next season as forwards Dan Lee and Marlen Walker have put pen to paper for another 2 years.
Back-rower Dan made his first appearance for the Pirates in August 2014, Injuries hampered his early development here in Cornwall, however when back to fitness he displayed obvious potential and has made a real impact this season.
His leadership skills on the field were displayed recently when captaining the Pirates in the British & Irish Cup 5th round away win against the Ospreys Prem Select side at Maesteg.
Auckland-born Marlen comes from the same school as Sonny Bill Williams, Steven Luatua and legendary All Black Bryan Williams.
What looked like an accelerated passage to the top took Walker to Auckland Blues Academy after leaving school where he endured a frustrating year of niggling injuries and missed opportunities.
That led him on to his travels from which he joined us from Weston-Super-Mare in January, 2015 and made his debut as a replacement in a memorable 45-38 win against Bristol.
Marlen works hard in the set piece and is always keen to run with ball in hand. A hat-trick scorer at Rotherham last season, he reached the 50 games milestones for the Pirates in the Championship win against Nottingham on New Year’s Eve.
Commenting these first two signings, a delighted coach Alan Paver said: "Confirming such news early in the year is always good. Both Marlen and Dan have been an integral part of our recent development as a team, and we have witnessed the progress they and others have made through their hard work and commitment.”
