The 2017 Annual Awards & Dinner

The 2016/17 rugby year ended on a high in a packed entertainment marquee at the Mennaye for the annual End of Season Awards Dinner.

Whilst the evening celebrated the developments and achievements of the past season, there was a touch of sadness as farewell gifts of engraved glass tankards were made to Strength & Conditioning Coach Frank Sanderson, Physiotherapist Dan Mannix and players Jack Arnott, Luke Chapman, Alex Dancer, Tyler Gendall and Jake Parker.

In recognition of 10 years with the Cornish Pirates two special awards were given to stalwart hooker Rob Elloway following his retirement from professional rugby. One was a framed Cornish Pirates shirt and the other a montage of chosen photographs.

Following the farewells, the main awards of the evening were made:

  • Players' Player of the Year: Nicolas De Battista

  • Player of the Year: Nicolas De Battista

  • Most Improved Player: Jack Innard

  • Sportsman of the Year: Jake Parker

  • Community Player of the Year: Matt Bolwell

  • Try of the Season: Matt Evans

  • Monckton Cup for Achievement – Gavin Cattle & Alan Paver

  • Volunteer of the Year – The Dave Berryman Cup: Dennis Way

Following the awards presentation and raffle, the evening was rounded off with a performance by The Black Jackets.

The Black Jackets or BJ's, formed a few months ago after Bar Bartlett (fly half/centre) started teaching Will Cargill (fly half) how to play the guitar. After Cargs picked it up pretty quickly, they started having jam sessions with Physio Dan Mannix, this quickly turned into a regular gig for the trio.

Prior to the Awards Dinner a number of other awards were made after the last home game with Bedford Blues:

  • Travelling Supporters 'Player of the Year' – Tom Duncan

  • The Edwin Bryant Trophy – Jake Parker

  • The Roger Pascoe Cup – Toby May

  • John Stirling Memorial Cup for Commitment - Adrian Bick

  • Clubman of the Year – Bob Jacka

  • 100 Games Merit Tie – Alex Cheesman

  • The President's Cup – Marlen Walker

Trophy History

The Dave Berryman Cup in memory of Dave Berryman

Monckton Cup for Achievement – This trophy is presented annually in memory of former players and respected club officers Bill and Brian Monckton.

Player of the Year – Many fine players have received this award since it was first introduced back in 1986. Jamie Dean was the winner then.

Players' Player of the Year – Introduced in 2010, this trophy was kindly sponsored by Kernow Model Rail Centre. For obvious reason it is viewed as very much a special award.

Travelling Supporters 'Player of the Year' – Presented annually since 2000 by David and Sue Holmes

'The Edwin Bryant Trophy' – This fine trophy, a handcrafted-mounted rugby ball in cedar, is presented in memory of Edwin Bryant, a respected rugby man who was for many years a member of the Cornwall Rugby Referees’ Society. The award goes annually to a player who has to have been a squad member for at least three seasons, with voting arranged by the Cornish Pirates Supporters Club.

The Roger Pascoe Cup – Another special trophy, this is presented annually to the Supporters 'Player of the Season’. It is in memory of former player 'Paco', who made over 1,000 appearances for the club.

The President's Cup – goes annually to a player who, in the opinion of the President, has been the most outstanding contributor on the field during the season. First presented by Dicky Evans to Richard Carroll in 2003
