Cornish Interest in Army v Navy Match

By Phil Westren

With six Cornish players named in the Royal Navy squad, local interest will inevitably be heightened when the Royal Navy face the British Army at Twickenham on Saturday.

80,000 spectators will be present to watch the teams compete for the Babcock Trophy, on an occasion which also marks the 100th fixture since the Unions were formed. The kick-off is at 3pm.

The Royal Navy are present holders of the trophy and the Cornish sextet comprises Redruth’s Ben Priddey (RNAS Culdrose) who will captain the side at hooker, wing Matt Bowden (HMS Montrose), lock Edd Pascoe (HMS Raleigh), flankers Ben Fox (40 Commando RM) and Sam Matavesi (HMS Raleigh), and replacement Dave Pascoe (RNAS Culdrose).

Edd Pascoe has this season been a member of the Cornish Pirates squad, and Dave Pascoe is a former Pirate who has also skippered the Royal Navy team in the past. Both Matt Bowden and Ben have played for Redruth, whilst Sam Matavesi has played for Camborne.

Also attending Saturday’s match will keen rugby supporter and former Army man Prince Harry, who is Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation.
