During the week of a family wedding, when the Cornish Pirates ‘Meet the Players’ event also took place, two grandsons of former Pirates player Graham Nicholas sprung a surprise on squad member Nicolas De Battista.
Nicolas joined the Cornish Pirates this summer from Argentine side Jockey Club de Rosario, so he was both taken aback and pleased when David and Mark Nicholas greeted him in Spanish, which is Argentina’s dominant language.
David and Mark’s mother Estela is Argentinean. She met her husband Richard Nicholas, who works in the oil and gas industry, when he was exploring and drilling for oil in her home town of Comodoro Rivadavia. The family are now based in Houston, Texas, having also previously lived in Paris and Aberdeen.
David and Mark are about to start further education this September, respectively in computing and golf management, in Scotland, so the wedding in Cornwall and the visit to watch the Pirates worked out well. Their uncle, Treive Nicholas, commented:
“They were chuffed to bits to speak to Nicolas, and hopefully their presence helped him feel at home!”
Treive added: “Buenas suerte Nicolas en la nueva temporada con los Pirates”, which in English roughly translates to - good luck Nicolas for the new season.
