Friday saw school rugby teams from about the Duchy gather at the Mennaye Field, Penzance, where the Pirates were delighted to host the conclusion of this year’s Cornwall School Games ‘Sevens’ rugby tournament.
Competing Year 10 sides who reached this year’s final stage were Budehaven Community College, Mounts Bay Academy, Liskeard Community College, Richard Lander School, Roseland Community College, and Truro School.
The teams were welcomed by Craig Handford from the Cornwall Sports Partnership, whilst, on behalf of the Cornish Pirates, Championship players Will Cargill and Matt Bolwell performed the official opening ceremony.
All of the day’s action took place on the Mennaye Nurseries field, where Cornwall’s RFU Development Officer Mike Bratt was referee. The standard of rugby was high, and with praise due each of the competitors there was added congratulatory mention due to Truro School, who ended up as winners.
2016 marks the sixth year of the Cornwall School Games, which will see approximately 20,000 Cornish Primary and Secondary children from 200 Cornish schools compete in 36 different sports.
